What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file which is saved on your computer. Cookies are normally used for purely technical purposes, to improve websites for users.

There are two types of cookie. One type saves a file on your computer for a certain period, e.g. a month. This type is used, for example, to adapt a website according to your preferences, choices and interests. The other type is called a session cookie. Session cookies always disappear when you close your web browser.

Are cookies dangerous?

No, cookies are not dangerous. Cookie files are ordinary text files, and cannot carry viruses. The files are small, and both Netscape and Explorer only allow a certain number of cookies to be saved to your computer?s memory. Therefore there is no chance of your memory being filled up by allowing cookies to be saved.
